How to apostille a Florida marriage certificate.

Florida marriage records come from two places, and both can be apostilled: a certified copy of the recorded license from the Clerk of Court in the county that issued it ($20 state fee), or the one-page certificate from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, signed by the State Registrar ($10). Either way it has to be a certified copy, and we ask for copies certified in 2014 or later so the signature can be verified.

Church or ceremony certificates and photocopies can't be apostilled, and marriages licensed in another state or country are certified there, not in Florida. Married in the last two months? Order from the clerk — a new license takes about 60 days to reach the state. Both versions work for spousal visas, residency and citizenship files abroad; if the receiving office prefers one, order that one.

Florida marriage certificate apostille, step by step.

1. Pick the source. Ask the office abroad what it wants. If it doesn't say, the clerk's certified copy of the recorded license usually shows more of the original — officiant and witnesses — while the Bureau's certificate is the simpler, state-signed abstract. Order from the county that issued the license, which isn't always where the wedding took place.

2. Order the certified copy. Bureau of Vital Statistics: through VitalChek ($15 for the first copy plus a $7 processing fee), by mail on form DH261 ($5 plus $1 shipping), or in person at 1217 N. Pearl St., Jacksonville. Clerk of Court: search the county's official records, then ask for a certified copy for an apostille. For marriage licenses, a paper copy with the clerk's stamped certification is the safe choice — ask us before buying an electronic one.

3. Check it. Certified, signed and sealed; issued in 2014 or later; names spelled exactly as on the passports and birth certificates the foreign registry will compare it with. A typo has to be corrected by the clerk or the Bureau before the apostille, not after.

4. Send it for the apostille. Mailed in yourself, about five to seven weeks. With us, 5–7 business days, state fee included.

Why Floridians apostille their marriage certificates.

These are the most common reasons our customers need a Florida marriage certificate apostilled.

Foreign Spouse Visa

Sponsoring a foreign-citizen spouse for residency or naturalization in another country requires proof of the marriage. Apostilled marriage certificates are accepted by every Hague Convention country's immigration authority.

Italian Dual Citizenship by Marriage

Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) requires apostilled marriage certificates in the line of descent. Citizenship by marriage (jure matrimonii) requires the spouses' own marriage certificate apostilled.

Foreign Real Estate Closings

When both spouses are on title to property abroad (Mexico, Costa Rica, Italy, Spain), the foreign property registry typically requires an apostilled marriage certificate to record the joint ownership.

Name Change Abroad

Updating your married name on foreign government records, banks, or property registries usually requires an apostilled marriage certificate as proof of the name change.

Destination Wedding Paperwork

Some destination wedding countries require an apostilled prior marriage certificate (and divorce decree, if applicable) before issuing a new marriage license. Italy, Portugal, and several Caribbean nations require this.

Retirement Visa Applications

Portugal's D7 visa, Spain's non-lucrative visa, Mexico's residency programs, and similar retirement tracks grant residency to married couples as a unit — but only with an apostilled marriage certificate proving the relationship.

Common questions.

Two places, and both can be apostilled: the Clerk of Court in the county that issued your marriage license, or the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics in Jacksonville (marriages from June 6, 1927 on), by mail, in person or through VitalChek. The state fee is $20 for a clerk-certified copy and $10 for the State Registrar's — both included in our $220. Ordering guide →
No. Only the civil record can be apostilled: a certified copy from the Clerk of Court or the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Church certificates, ceremony keepsakes and photocopies aren't certified by a Florida official, so the Department of State can't authenticate them.
From the county where the marriage license was filed, which is usually (but not always) the county where the ceremony took place. If you don't know, contact the Clerk in the county of the ceremony — they'll either have the record or direct you to the correct county.
No — we only apostille Florida-issued documents. For marriage certificates from other states, you'll need to use that state's apostille service. The certificate must be authenticated by the state that issued it.
Often, yes. Italian and Polish citizenship applications usually require both. Foreign spouse visas require the marriage certificate plus the foreign spouse's birth certificate. Bundle pricing: $380 for 2 documents, $160 each for 3+. Call (850) 900-3443 if you're unsure.
Most foreign governments require a notarized affidavit affirming you're unmarried (or divorced) and free to marry. We can notarize this at our West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa or Clearwater office at your in-person appointment, then apostille it together with your other documents. The Department of State charges $10 for a marriage certificate signed by the State Registrar and $20 for one certified by a Clerk of Court. Our service is $220 all-in either way — state fee, review, in-person filing and U.S. return shipping — $380 for two and $160 each for three or more.
Mailed to the Department of State yourself, about five to seven weeks. With us, 5–7 business days from the day we receive the certificate. A new certified copy takes a few business days from the Bureau, often the same day at the clerk's counter.
