How to apostille a Florida death certificate.

A death certificate apostille certifies the State Registrar's signature, so the copy has to come from the Florida Department of Health — the Bureau of Vital Statistics, VitalChek, or a county health department for deaths from 2009 on. Either version can be apostilled: without cause of death, which anyone 18 or older can order, or with cause, which is limited to close family and people with an interest in the estate for deaths less than 50 years ago. We ask for copies certified in 2014 or later.

Funeral-home copies and photocopies are rejected. Deaths in another state are certified by that state, and a death abroad is recorded on a federal Consular Report of Death, which the U.S. Department of State authenticates. Estates and pension claims abroad often need several apostilled copies, so order enough certified copies at once.

Not sure about yours? Send a photo when you order and we check it before anything is filed. How to order a certified copy →

Send the certified copy, not a scan: the apostille is a separate certificate attached to the paper itself, so the paper you mail is the paper that goes abroad. Tell us the destination country when you order — it decides whether Florida issues an apostille or, for countries outside the Hague Convention, an authentication certificate.

Ordering several documents — for a family move, a citizenship file or an estate? They travel together in one envelope, and a photo of each one before you ship lets us flag a problem while it's still easy to fix.

Florida death certificate apostille, step by step.

1. Choose the version. Inheritance and property transfers usually need only proof of death; insurers and some pension funds want the cause. If you're eligible, the version with cause costs the same and covers more uses.

2. Order the certified copy. Through VitalChek ($15 for the first copy plus a $7 processing fee), by mail on form DH727 ($5 for the search and one copy, $4 per extra copy, $1 shipping) or in person at 1217 N. Pearl St., Jacksonville. Deaths from 2009 on normally take 3–5 business days plus shipping.

3. Order enough copies. A notary, a bank and a land registry abroad may each keep one. Extra copies on the same order are $4 each — far cheaper than ordering again.

4. Send them for the apostille. We file in person and return them in 5–7 business days. A death in another state is apostilled by that state; a U.S. citizen's death abroad is a Consular Report of Death Abroad, authenticated by the U.S. Department of State.

When you need an apostilled death certificate.

These are the most common reasons families apostille Florida death certificates.

Foreign Probate & Estate Settlement

Transferring real estate, bank accounts, or other assets located abroad after a death requires an apostilled death certificate at the foreign probate court or notary. Italy, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America all require this.

Italian Citizenship (Jure Sanguinis)

Italian citizenship by descent requires apostilled death certificates for every deceased ancestor in your direct line of descent. Most applicants apostille 2–4 ancestor death certificates.

Polish, Irish, Portuguese, German Citizenship

Most ancestral citizenship programs require apostilled death certificates for ancestors who connect you to the ancestral homeland.

Foreign Pension Claims

Foreign pension agencies (Social Security equivalents, private pensions abroad) require apostilled death certificates when a surviving spouse or beneficiary claims a deceased person's pension.

Foreign Property Transfer

When the deceased held title to property abroad, the foreign property registry typically requires an apostilled death certificate to transfer title to heirs.

International Insurance Claims

Foreign life insurance policies or international beneficiary claims require an apostilled death certificate as proof of death before payout.

Common questions.

Florida calls them with and without cause of death, and both can be apostilled for the same $220. Inheritance and property transfers abroad usually need only the version without cause; insurers and some pension claims want the cause. Ask the receiving office — and if you're eligible, the version with cause covers more uses.
From the Florida Department of Health: the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Jacksonville (by mail, in person, or online through VitalChek), or a county health department for deaths from 2009 on. Mail and in-person orders are $5 for the search and the first copy, $4 for each extra copy. Ordering guide →
We don't order vital records ourselves, but you may not need to be family: anyone 18 or older can order the version without cause of death. The version with cause is limited to close family, people with an interest in the estate and their representatives for deaths under 50 years ago. Call (850) 900-3443 and we'll walk you through it.
One for each deceased ancestor in your direct line of descent — usually 2–4 certificates total (parent, grandparent, possibly great-grandparent). Bundle pricing: $380 for 2, $160 each for 3+. Call if you're unsure which certificates your specific application requires.
The date of death doesn't matter; the date the copy was certified does. Order a fresh certified copy (2014 or later) from the Bureau of Vital Statistics — older records can take longer to process — and we'll apostille it like any other.
5–7 business days from when we receive your certified death certificate. We file in person at the Florida Department of State in Tallahassee, which is what makes our turnaround faster than the state's 5–7 week mail-in queue.
The Department of State charges $10 per death certificate, and a certified copy costs $5 by mail from the Bureau ($15 plus fees through VitalChek). Our service is $220 all-in — state fee, review, in-person filing and U.S. return shipping — $380 for two and $160 each for three or more.
Mailed to the Department of State yourself, about five to seven weeks. With us, 5–7 business days from the day we receive the document, filed in person in Tallahassee.
